Lakeview Resident to Appear on ABC-TV's "Shark Tank"
Kim Preis pitches maternity line to multi-millionaire business tycoons
Chicago—When Kim Preis, a Lakeview resident, mother of two, and founder of Samson Martin Maternity & Baby, applied to be on ABC-TV's "Shark Tank," she knew it was a long shot. Then, to her delight, she received a call from the producers of the reality show inviting her to pitch her idea to the five "Sharks"— a panel of multi-millionaire business tycoons. In an episode that airs on Friday, May 13, the Sharks will hear an investment proposal from Preis and consider whether to invest in her business.
"I was just channel surfing with my husband when we came across the show," said Preis. "I've been working to build my maternity line and make it more accessible to everyone, and as an entrepreneur, I thought it looked like a great opportunity."
Samson Martin debuted in 2003 as a designer line of tees and tank tops. Preis' mission was to create a fashionable collection that encourages pregnant women to stop hiding behind their beautiful bellies and embrace their personal style. The tees are designed to be form fitting and sexy to match her "have a babe, be a babe" approach to pregnancy.
"About six years ago, when all of my girlfriends were pregnant, I realized that everyone kept asking one question, 'when are you due?'" said Preis. That realization inspired the popular Samson Martin-exclusive DUE INTM tee, followed by tees adorned with "Now Showing," "Coming This ____" and more. The full collection can be found in more than 100 maternity boutiques nationwide.
Since its debut, Samson Martin has been featured on E! News Live as one of the "Top Ten Must Haves" for celebrity moms-to-to be, and has graced the pages of magazines including People, US Weekly, Life & Style and Fit Pregnancy.
Preis' desire to be on Shark Tank came as the result of a changing, post-recession marketplace.
"In the beginning, I was sold only in high-end boutiques," said Preis. "But as the economy changed so did my business. I want to go on Shark Tank to expand and with their expertise and guidance, eventually make my way into mass merchants like Target and Kohl's"
